Properties and Parameters of Summer Tyres

Summer tyres ensure optimal performance on dry and wet roads during the warmer months. Their main properties and parameters focus on providing better grip, handling, and durability at high temperatures.

Key Features of Summer Tyres:

  • Hard Rubber Compound: Summer tyres are made from a hard rubber compound that guarantees optimal grip and handling in high temperatures.
  • Stiffness and Stability: High-quality summer tyres maintain rigidity and stability on hot asphalt but no longer have their properties at lower temperatures, losing their elasticity and becoming slippery (summer tyres are effective when the average temperature is above +7°C).
  • Finer and Denser Tread Pattern: Compared to winter tyres, summer tyres have a finer and denser tread pattern.
  • Effective Water Displacement: They provide efficient water drainage, reducing the risk of aquaplaning and improving grip on wet roads through wider longitudinal and shallow transverse grooves.
  • Excellent Grip and Precise Handling: Proper summer tyres ensure excellent grip and precise handling on both dry and wet roads.
  • Short Stopping Distance and Good Stability: They offer a short stopping distance and good stability at high speeds.
  • Noise Reduction: Summer tyres are designed to reduce noise levels, providing a more comfortable driving experience.

What are the Key Parameters of Summer Tyres?

The tyre size is indicated by a series of numbers and letters, for example, 205/55 R16, where:

  • 205 – represents the tyre width in millimetres.
  • 55 – indicates the aspect ratio, which is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tyre width.
  • R – denotes radial tyre construction (the tyre cords are arranged radially, from the centre to the edge, at right angles to the direction of travel).
  • 16 – indicates the diameter of the wheel rim in inches.
  • Load Index: Indicates the maximum load capacity of the tyre. This is represented by a number, for example, 91, which corresponds to a specific weight in kilograms (in this case, up to 615 kg per tyre).
  • Speed Index: Indicates the maximum speed at which the summer tyre can be used safely. This is represented by a letter, for example, V (up to 240 km/h), W (up to 270 km/h), or Y (up to 300 km/h).
  • Treadwear Rating: Indicates the tyre’s durability. A higher value means the tyre lasts longer. For example, a Treadwear rating of 300 means this tyre lasts three times longer than a model with a rating of 100.
  • Traction Rating: Indicated by the letters AA, A, B, or C, with AA being the best rating.
  • Temperature Rating: Indicates the tyre’s resistance to overheating. This is marked with the letters A, B, or C, with A being the highest grade.
